The Alex Lindsay Memorial Award, a registered charitable trust, was founded in memory of the former New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Alex Lindsay, who died in 1974.

Following its inception in 1975, the Award was initially granted biennially, but since 1991, grants have been made annually. To date, the The Alex Lindsay Memorial Award has granted funds totalling $200,000 to 92 successful applicants, among whom were Wilma Smith, Donald Armstrong, Alexa Still, Marya Martin, Sam Konise, Martin Riseley, Rachel Vernon, Ashley Brown and James Bush. Ten award winners are currently members of the NZSO, another sixteen are past members or contract players, and at least thirty-five recipients altogether are active in orchestral music in New Zealand and overseas.

To mark the year 2000, the ALMA Trustees introduced the National Youth Orchestra Prize, a grant of $1000 awarded to an outstanding member of the NYO, chosen by consultation with the NYO Co-ordinator, NYO tutors and the ALMA Trustees.
