Where do the Awards come from?

The money used to pay Alex Lindsay Awards each year comes from the earnings on a modest capital fund which is invested across a range of low-risk securities mainly to provide income, but also a certain amount of capital growth. The trustees receive investment advice at no charge from the team at Macquarie Financial Services in Wellington, and would like to acknowledge the excellent service that they provide.

In order to try and add to the capital fund, we organise from time to time open rehearsals to especially popular NZSO concerts. These usually take place on a Saturday morning (so far only in Wellington), and enable regular concert-goers and others to observe the orchestra, along with a noted conductor and soloist, in their final preparations for that evening’s performance. Entry is by donation, the more generous the better!

Unfortunately, the Alex Lindsay trustees have neither the time nor the expertise to organise regular fund-raising or otherwise create a high profile for the Award. We have always relied on word-of-mouth among a relatively restricted circle of students, teachers, musicians, concert-goers and music-lovers up and down the country. We do receive a small number of regular donations from around the country, and the trustees are very grateful for all donations, however modest, that go towards building up our capital fund. Every little bit helps!
