Why are Awards needed?Awards are generally made to young musicians who have completed undergraduate studies in New Zealand and wish to pursue advanced studies overseas with renowned teachers and at prestigious schools in Australia, North America or Europe. They seek tuition, experience and the musical stimulus that New Zealand, with its small population, cannot offer, even though the standard of teaching to graduate level is very good here now. |
|
The costs that these young musicians face in order to pursue their studies are daunting. Even with partial fees scholarships, which our young talented players often win, the expenses for fares, living, remainder of fees, and sometimes purchase of a suitable instrument, can be a burden. The grants that the Alex Lindsay Memorial Award is able to make cannot cover all these costs, but if they can cover airfares and several months’ living expenses they make a significant contribution to enabling these dedicated young musicians to follow their dream. |
